In addition to the demo system on your disk, you also have the option of calling the SoftArc Online system. This is an actual running FirstClass system that has been installed at SoftArc.
To call SoftArc Online you will need:
1. A Macintosh computer with at least 1 floppy drive and 512K of memory.
2. The “FirstClass™ Demo” application and the “SoftArcOnline” Settings document.
3. A 1200 baud or faster modem connected to the Macintosh and a phone line.
To connect to SoftArc Online:
1. Double click on the document “SoftArcOnline”. This has been setup to use a 2400 baud Hayes® Compatible modem connected to the Macintosh Modem Port, calling long distance to area code (416). If your setup is the same as this then you may skip to step 7, otherwise you will need to changed the communications setup as described in steps 2-6.
2. Click on the Setup... button. The FirstClass Communication Setup dialog box will appear.
3. The default communication speed is 2400 baud. If you have a faster modem, you may select the appropriate speed.
5. The phone number of SoftArc Online is 1 (416) 609-2250. This number has already been entered for you. If you are within the (416) area code, you may remove the 1 (416) part of the number.
6. Exit the dialog box by clicking on the OK button.
7. You are now ready to log in. Log in like you did with the demo disk, using the User Name guest and no password.
8. You will be connected to SoftArc Online. There are various conferences for reporting new feature requests, marketing information, bug reports, etc. You are free to browse and contribute.
9. If you want, you can have your own personal account. Since the Auto-Registration feature is enabled on SoftArc Online, instead of logging in as guest, login as any userid you like and fill out the Registration form. You will now have your own userid.
Notes for high speed modem users:
SoftArc Online supports V.32 9600 baud, MNP 5 and V.42bis compression. If you have a modem which supports any of these standards you can connect to SoftArc Online at high speed. To make a 9600 baud connection, simply set the baud rate in the setup dialog to 9600 and choose the Hayes® Compatible modem. To make a compression connection (MNP5 or V.42bis) you will require a hardware handshake cable, you must check the Hardware Handshake box and choose either the MNP5 ot the V.42bis modem. If you have non-standard modem then you can edit the modem strings by clicking on the Edit button. If you have difficulty connecting at high speed, connect first at 2400 baud to ensure that your setup is correct.
